The Project

Back in October 2020, we tendered for this exciting project in the heart of Balmoral. The project was to turn a vacant council grassland into a thriving sporting hub for the rapidly growing community of Balmoral. Given the scope and impact of such a project, we certainly had our fingers crossed that we would be selected by both The Hills Shire Council and the TRN group, who would be contracting the sports field development arm of this project to us.

In January 2021 we were trusted by both parties with this project, and we were prepared and ready to go within a few weeks. Going into this project, we knew these sporting fields would be used heavily, with various sporting codes using the field year-round. With this in mind, we used our in-depth experience and local knowledge to build world-class surfaces with an emphasis on year-round durability.

We firmly believe that the environment these sporting clubs can build is the foundation of their culture and participation levels, and while we only play a small part in this ecosystem, having a high-quality playing surface that’s usable year-round and safe is paramount.

The Process

Anything worthwhile comes with its challenges, and as we navigated this project, we certainly faced several factors that forced us to alter the course accordingly. With the widespread implications of COVID, it was our responsibility to provide a safe working environment for our staff and anyone else working within the precinct.

Beyond this, we also had to adapt to unseasonable wet weather in Sydney, which continually forced us to reorganise the key milestones within the project to ensure the overall project was completed on time and within budget. In working with any local council or commercial builder, we understand the importance of adhering to the budget and timelines. Sometimes this forces us to work harder and pivot when needed, but we pride ourselves on being a high-quality option in the sports field construction space, and this level of service is something we believe is the benchmark.

A major milestone for this project was the drainage system for each sporting field. Even as these sporting fields were coming to life, we witnessed glimpses of the extreme weather events that are unfortunately likely to become more prevalent here in Sydney. Given this knowledge, the team emphasised the systems that would ensure this oval drained properly.

Any drainage nerds out there would appreciate how true these lines are on the left – maybe that’s just us though…

The Outcome

The project was completed in June of this year, and the Balmoral Road Reserve Sports Complex was opened to the community. For many years to come, the growing young families of Kellysville and the surrounding suburbs will be able to use this space and come together.

In conclusion, we thank The Hills Shire Council and TRN Group for trusting us with such an important community project. We never take this trust for granted, and it was a pleasure to work with both parties.
